EAST SURREY WALKERS - WALKS LIBRARY
This Library contains a selection of walks, mainly circular, in our area, firstly as an aid to new Walks Leaders and secondly to individual walkers to provide them with examples of tried and tested walks. All the walks have been submitted by the ESW walk Leaders, who originated them, and were happy for them to be shared in this Library.
The walks are shown in two sections:-
HALF DAY WALKS - under 7.5 miles in length.
LONG WALKS - 7.5 miles and over in length for a full day walk..
GENERAL GUIDELINES
Clicking on one of the links above will take you to a map of our short or long walks as applicable. Above the map are two Tabs - one for the MAP and one for a LIST of all the walks on a separate page.
On the top right side of the map there is an icon to chose alternative map displays. The default display uses "Open Topo" maps. Click on the icon and you can see the map using "Open Street" maps as an alternative display.
The map will show flags for individual walks, or for the number of walks in that location. You can move around the map and zoom in so that the number flag becomes separate flags for individual walks. Click on a single walk flag and a text box appears with details of the walk. Click on the Walk Title to display that walk on a separate screen map. On the icon on the top right, click to select Ordnance Survey. This will show 1:50000, but zoom in and it will change to 1:25000.
Clicking on LIST in the top Tab will display a screen listing the walks with their distance and elevation data. You can sort this list by Title, Distance or by Elevation Gain. Clicking on any walk in this list will also take you to the screen map displaying that walk. By default, the walks will be displayed 20 per page, with a page select option at the top. This can be changed to "View all" to display them all on one page.if preferred.
The Walk Title is nearest Place Name followed by the Library Index Number (L01, L02...H01, H02...etc ) - allowing the walks to be sorted by location on the List Tab.
When displaying any walk, a green marker locates the start position, and a red marker locates the end - for a circular walk these will obviously coincide. A set of icons at the top left of the map offer other functions such as zooming in or out, viewing full screen and displaying elevation details. The bottom left icon gives a profile of the walk where you can move the cursor to follow the route to show the elevations.
There is a Query icon on the left of the screen to give further Help if needed.
You can print the map from the web page with a choice of Portrait or Landscape prints.
If you have a GPS, or use computer route mapping software, or use a mobile App such as ViewRanger or OS Maps, you can download a GPX to your computer to install on any of those systems. If you do not know about gpx files, see HEREfor further information. Please note that the gpx file will only be usable if you already have the navigational software and/or hardware to use it.
However, when you download a GPX file, the Saved File Name of the walk is Index Number followed by Place Name - to facilitate display of the walk name when the walks are loaded on to a software or GPS device.
To see nearby Postcodes, click on the link at the bottom left corner of the map that initially says Location Details, and select Nearby Postcodes. Then click on a point on the map to see the location of nearby postcodes.
OTHER NOTES
Please check that the start point is still suitable for car parking and if any charges apply for the day you wish to walk.
All map numbers quoted are for OS Explorer maps.
Note: the Estimated Time shown is for an individual doing the walk, but extra time should be added for leading a group, depending on terrain, stiles, stops etc.
