East Surrey Walkers

Walking for Pleasure

Our group is very sociable and we enjoy many social events throughout the year. We will advertise up and coming events on our website under Social Events Programme, or look out for them on our Notice Board email if you are a member. Event organisers are always grateful for any assistance whether it is with baking cakes or general help so please feel free to offer your services. Contact details for each event will be listed on Noticeboard and on the relevant page in the Social Events Programme section of the website.

Events held during the day are generally preceded with a short walk. Some events have limited numbers but most welcome family and friends to join in all the fun, so come along you are very welcome.

New Year lunch

This usually takes place in January and we have a scrummy traditional Christmas Lunch with all the trimmings plus soft or alcoholic drinks.

Walking Wounded Reunion

A few years ago, I suffered a knee injury, which stopped me walking for quite a while. Around that time another ESW member who lives very close had her hip replaced, we would meet up and hobble around the village on our crutches. I quipped 'We are the Walking Wounded!'.

What occurred to me was that I not only missed walking, but also meeting up with friends I had made through ESW. I knew a few other members that were unable to walk due to various health issues so I invited them round for tea which was a great success and that, I thought, was that!!!

A few months later, I was asked if I would consider doing it again. I was delighted to oblige. Due to its success it has now become an official Social Event which is held twice a year, in Spring and Autumn.

Our numbers have grown and our happy band of WW look forward to meeting up with old friends.

We welcome new attendees who find themselves unable to manage their preferred walks. Details of WW reunions are advertised on newsletters.

London Blind Walk

We assist the London Blind Walkers in spring by leading people with sight loss on about a seven mile walk finishing at The British Legion in Oxted for tea and homemade cakes

We meet the visually impaired people at Oxted station. There can be up to 15 or more including their helpers, some will have guide dogs or use canes, but we don’t really know until they arrive. Their walking needs are all different so we ask how they would like to be led. Most will link their arm through yours or hold on to your elbow.

We also ask if they would like verbal descriptions of the scenery etc on the walk – this can add to their enjoyment although not everyone wants this – it is all about communication.

Then usually at coffee or lunch time you swap and walk with someone different. The walk is slower than normal so people who think they can’t do 7 miles will actually be fine on this walk. We finish at the Oxted British Legion and have some cakes and tea.

It’s a very rewarding day helping the visually impaired; if we were not here to help they would not be able to walk in our beautiful countryside, so please come along and give it a go. Everyone is welcome.

Cream Tea

This is the first of our summer events. Sometimes there can be a long or short walk beforehand and everyone is ready to polish off a nice cup of tea, fresh scones, topped with jam and cream and a different variety of homemade cakes.

Summer Buffet

This event is kindly hosted by one of our members in their beautiful garden and house.

Annual General Meeting

This is held in the autumn and open to all members.  The committee run through all their reports and members have the opportunity to discuss agenda items. Awards and change of committee members maybe part of the day, then we have some fun mingling and eating homemade cakes and drinking coffee and tea.

Autumn Social Evenings

In the past we have held a Skittles night, danced the night away at a 60’s & 70’s disco, and our last event was a very entertaining, fun Barn Dance!

So there is something for everyone, especially if you like home made cakes!!!
So please join us!!
