In 2011 the Surrey Area of The Ramblers agreed to take on the semi-annual inspection of rights of way that had previously been undertaken by County Council staff. Originally a local authority BVPI (Best Value Performance Indicator), each half year a computer selected random selection of 2.5% of the rights of way in the county is walked and the state of the paths, stiles, gates, fingerposts, waymarks etc is assessed. The results can then be compared over time and against other local authorities.
East Surrey Walkers presently has 9 members who have attended the required training course and now, in May and November, inspect 8 -10 paths each over a total distance of approximately 3 km. It should take no more than 5 or 6 hours allowing for the time needed to get from one location to another.
If you are interested in becoming one of our Path Inspectors, please contact Tony Pearson (email@example.com) and he will add your name for the next scheduled training course.
